Children's Waiting Rooms

Children's Waiting Room ClientNCSL, in conjunction with the San Francisco Women Lawyers Alliance, operates respite childcare for children of persons with business in court. A safe and positive environment inside the San Francisco Hall of Justice opened in 1991. Privately funded at that time, it was the first in the nation of its type.

In January, 1998, we opened a second Children's Waiting Room, this time at the new San Francisco Civil Courthouse.  The two Waiting Rooms are designed to offer respite childcare and important family support and intervention, and to separate young children from the trauma of the criminal, juvenile, and domestic courtrooms.

Children's Waiting Room at the S.F. Hall of JusticeThe Waiting Rooms are staffed by the coordinator, a staff aide, and carefully screened volunteers. Caregivers provide a snack for each child and as much individual attention as possible. The children are supervised in activities which strengthen skills, both physically and academically. Interactions involve conversations, books, toys, organized games, and artwork. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 12noon, and 1:00pm - 4:30pm.

The essence of the Children's Waiting Rooms are their volunteers.  Committed, mature people who enjoy working with children are always needed.  For the Criminal Court at the Hall of Justice, please call (415)553-9377.  For the Civil Courthouse, please call (415)703-0255,  FAX (415)703-0267.

This is a free service, geared towards children of low and moderate income families. We welcome tax-deductible donations of equipment and supplies, educational material, toys and games, and financial contributions to support this program.

When a parent is arrested, children whose chaotic lives may already have left them with little sense of control often feel even more alienated from the events that swirl around them. Please click here to learn about a Bill of Rights for the children of incarcerated parents.
