Job Placement and Job Fairs
There is a place for all of us in the workforce. All of us are entitled to add value to ourselves and our families. NCSL's success in helping ex-offenders secure employment shows the power of working together as a community -- as well as the need for dedicated and reliable employees. NCSL has been featured in the New York Times for its effective job placement programs. Despite difficult economic times, through collaboration with the San Francisco Training Partnership, the Homeless Employment Collaborative, and the Mayor's Office of Community Investment ex-offenders placed on jobs by NCSL received an average starting wage of $12.43 per hour. Go for it!
Conviction and incarceration are not barriers to employment and career success! Job-ready persons on probation and parole are served by our staff of job developers and counselors. Pre-employment readiness through NCSL's Awakening New Futures Work Readiness Training 40-hour workshop, along with job training, are provided when appropriate. The goal is to achieve a sustainable, satisfying employment path. Studies have shown that securing a job is the best predictor that an ex-offender will not return to prison. The path begins with a firm foundation in recovery and positive support. To build proper approach, it is often advisable for the job seeker to begin with our Awakening New Futures Work Readiness Training 40-hour workshop. NCSL's annual Job Fair for Ex-Offenders has become a model of success for communities across the nation to follow. Both potential employers and ex-offenders can benefit from our answers to the question: "Why Hire an Ex-Offender?" Ron Mendlin, a member of NCSL's staff, has written a series of six workbooks for JIST Works publishers, as part of their Putting the Bars Behind You series. Ron's books will help you find a job and adjust to life after prison. Additional tips for the job search and job interviews may be found by clicking here. |
