Why Hire an Ex-Offender?

Here are NCSL's responses to employers' most frequently asked questions:

Q - Why should I take the risk of hiring someone with a criminal record?

A - NCSL screens all job seekers before we refer them to you. We also provide counseling and other services to job seekers, so that the people we refer to employers have more support than the average job seeker. The risk of hiring a NCSL job seeker -- all of whom have been screened, counseled and trained by social service professionals -- is probably lower than the risk of hiring someone off the street. Our success in helping ex-offenders secure employment shows the power of working together as a community -- as well as the need for dedicated and reliable employees.

Q
- Do I have the right to know the specifics of a prospective employee's record?

A - Most of our clients are very willing to discuss their past mistakes with you -- and the lessons they've learned from them -- during the initial interview and afterwards. In addition, NCSL works hard to match job seekers and employers. For example, we would not attempt to place a job seeker with a record of check forging in a banking position. Further, NCSL counselors are available to employers to discuss concerns employers may have about employees for up to 90 days after hire.

Q
- What is the cost of using the referral services of NCSL?

A - NCSL services are free to both employer and employee. In addition, when an employer hires an ex-offender through NCSL, the Private Industry Council may pay half the new employee's salary through the On-the-Job Training (OJT) Program during a training period.

Q
- Will the person I hire have a drug problem?

A - Ex-offenders join NCSL's job placement program voluntarily. Generally, these job seekers are committed to staying clean and sober. NCSL staff is familiar with addiction and recovery issues and processes, and offer group and individual support.

Q
- Do I have to worry about ex-offenders being violent on the job?

A - A small proportion of NCSL clients have records of violence. However, most of our job seekers are required to participate in training sessions to improve their skills in conflict resolution and stress reduction.
